In the last week of the term the Year 5 children were lucky enough to go to Tahunanui Beach for a study of the Intertidal zone led by Richard de Hamel.  We learnt a lot about penguins and crabs and the influences humans have on their habitats.  We also had a good chance to explore the rockpools and expand on our new knowledge of rock pool creatures and their environment.

The best ever Hangi

For Maori Language week we had a hangi.  We peeled and cut up kumara and cabbage the day before.  Some people arrived very early on Friday morning to see the fire lit, the flames raging, the hole being dug, and the hangi made.  All we had to do was wait in anticipation for the food to be cooked.  And.... it was amazing - yummy!

Swimming lessons and swim safe programme

The children in Tōtara had a fantastic time at the Aquatic Centre in Richmond.  We all improved our swimming ability.  As well, we learnt some very important safety skill when we are in and around water.

Buddy Classes
On Friday we had our first visit with our buddy classes - Seaview and Ti Kouka.  We read the younger children some poems from our poem book.  Then we helped the children cut out pictures of different animals and classify them into mammals, birds, fish, reptiles and amphibians.  It was great fun getting to know our new buddies.

Dude Perfect challenges

Dude Perfect challenges -

Our challenge was to perfect a 'challenge' with a group of friends.  We could use any materials or objects we needed.  Some examples were domino runs, marble runs, bottle flipping and goal shooting.  Check out some of these photos.
